Some programs include Tag Type definitions in their datafiles. The Tag Type (AKA Fact Type) definitions in the datafile take precedence over the Tag Type definitions maintained in GedSite. Genealogy applications that supply Tag Type definitions are Family Historian, Legacy®, RootsMagic™, and The Master Genealogist™.

The Tag Types window shows a list of Tag Types. Tag Types are defined in one of two places:

  1. If you open the window via Utilities > Edit Tag Types > All Datafiles, the window shows Tag Types in a file under the Documents\GedSite\Languages folder. Tag Types defined in this file will apply to any datafile file processed by GedSite.
  2. If you open the window via Utilities > Edit Tag Types > Current Datafile Folder, the window shows Tag Types in a file located in the same folder as the current GEDCOM file. Tag Types defined in this file will apply to any GEDCOM file in that folder.

Each Tag Type has a Label and a Name. The Label may vary by language, but the Name does not. The text shown for each item in the list is the Name. The Label will appear in the generated site. The Name is used as an identifier, and it is used only within GedSite. When opening the Tag Types window, the items are sorted by Name. New items are added at the end of the list, but after closing and re-opening the list, the items are again sorted by Name.

Each item in the list includes a checkbox. A checked item is "enabled", an unchecked item is "disabled". A disabled item is ignored when GedSite is making the site.

The icons beneath the list follow the same rules as other lists in GedSite. Use the plus icon to add an item, use the pencil icon to edit an item, etc.

Tag Type files are XML files. They are language-specific and have the culture code in the filename. So, for example, the culture code for English (U.S.) is "en-us", and a Tag Type definition file for English (U.S.) is named "en-us-tag-types.xml".

Predefined Tag Types

When you open the Tag Types window, GedSite includes predefined tag types in the list. If you edit a predefined Tag TypeNote 1, GedSite will save the item as a customized item. This makes it convenient to override predefined Tag Types.

Tag Types you have changed are shown in bold in the list of Tag Types.

If you delete a predefined Tag Type, the item will be removed from the list. However, the predefined item is not removed from GedSite, it is only removed from whichever Tag Type file you are editing. If you have customized a predefined Tag Type and you want to reset it to the original values as supplied with the GedSite program, delete it from the list. When you re-open the list, the original predefined item will be included.

Renaming Tag Types and Roles

You may rename Tag Types and Roles even when Tag Type definitions are defined in your genealogy application. This is useful when the Tag Type label or Role label defined in your genealogy application is not ideal for use in your site.

Rename a Tag Type

GedSite uses a Tag Type's Label property when showing a Tag Type label in the site. You may change the Tag Type label by editing the Label property. The Label property will be used even if your genealogy application provides a Tag Type definition.

To rename a Tag Type:

  1. Use the Utilities > Edit Tag Types > All Datafiles command or the Utilities > Edit Tag Types > Current Datafile Folder command to open a list of Tag Types.
  2. Scroll down until you see the Tag Type whose label you want to rename. If there is no entry for the Tag Type, use the [+] button under the list to add one.
    1. For a new Tag Type entry, set the Name property to the Tag Type name defined in your genealogy application.
  3. Set the Label property to the desired text.
  4. Click the [OK] button to save the changes to the Tag Type and close the Tag Type window.
  5. Make further changes to the Tag Types, if desired.
  6. Click the [OK] button to save the changes to the Tag Types and close the Tag Types window.

Rename a Role

GedSite uses a Role's Label property when showing a Role label in the site. You may change the Role label by editing the Label property. The Label property will be used even if your genealogy application provides a Role definition.

To rename a Role:

  1. Use the Utilities > Edit Tag Types > All Datafiles command or the Utilities > Edit Tag Types > Current Datafile Folder to open a list of Tag Types.
  2. Scroll down until you see the Tag Type with the Role whose label you want to rename. If there is no entry for the Tag Type, use the [+] button under the list to add one.
    1. For a new Tag Type entry, set the Name property to the Tag Type name defined in your genealogy application.
  3. In the list of Roles, double-click the Role whose label you want to rename. If there is no entry for the Role, use the [+] button under the list to add one.
    1. For a new Role entry, set the Name property to the role name defined in your genealogy application.
  4. Set the Label property to the desired text.
  5. Click the [OK] button to save the changes to the Role and close the Role window.
  6. Click the [OK] button to save the changes to the Tag Type and close the Tag Type window.
  7. Make further changes to the Tag Types, if desired.
  8. Click the [OK] button to save the changes to the Tag Types and close the Tag Types window.

When using GedSite with applications that supply Tag Type definitions, Role sentences defined in GedSite are ignored. If you wish to rename a Role, you may change the Role label as described above. You can leave the Role sentences empty.

So, for example, these GEDCOM records will create a "Birth" event tag in GedSite:

 1 BIRT
 2 DATE 17 FEB 1927

The GEDCOM file may include an additional TYPE record to specify the Tag Type Name:

 1 BIRT
 2 TYPE Alt-Birth
 2 DATE 18 FEB 1927

The TYPE record is typically used with custom event types created by the user.

The Tag Type Group is implied by the GEDCOM tag and cannot be changed via the GEDCOM Type parameter.

Notes

  1. If you open an item, and press [OK] without making any changes, the item is considered changed and it will be saved as a customized item.
