GedSite runs on Windows 10 or newer.Note 1

GedSite uses two Microsoft components that you should install on your PC. One or both of the installers may report that you already have the component installed. If so, you don't need to re-install it, so just exit the installer.

  1. You must install the .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime package or GedSite will not run properly. If you have already installed .NET 8.0, or if your installation of MS Windows already includes .NET 8.n, you do not have to install it again.

Follow these instructions to install the .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime package:

    1. Go to https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/8.0.
    2. Under the ".NET Desktop Runtime 8.0.n" heading, click the x64 link.

Make sure you choose the right section. You must see Desktop in the heading.

The version number will be "8.0.n" where "n" is a number. Install the most-recent version, the version with the highest number in "n".

Click x64. GedSite is a 64-bit program and will only run on 64-bit versions of MS Windows.

    3. Save the downloaded file somewhere convenient.
    4. Run the installer.
  2. You must install the Microsoft WebView2 component, an embedded browser component that GedSite uses for the Map User Item's Map Editor.

Follow these instructions to install the Microsoft WebView2 component:

    1. Go to https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2/?form=MA13LH#download.
    2. Under "Evergreen Standalone Installer" near the bottom of the page, click [X64] to download the Evergreen installer.
    3. Accept the license terms.
    4. Save the downloaded file somewhere convenient.
    5. Run the installer.

Download the GedSite Installer

The GedSite installer is available via download only. After you purchase a license, the registration system will send you a link with your registration details and a link to download the GedSite installer.

Your antivirus software may not trust the GedSite installer because GedSite has not yet earned enough reputation points to convince antivirus software makers that it can be trusted. You may have to instruct your antivirus software to allow you to download the installer if that software deems it suspicious.

You will need your registration data during the install process. Do not share your registration data with anyone else. You will need your registration data if you need to re-install the GedSite program on a new or repaired computer, so keep it in safe place.

Install GedSite

You do not have to install or uninstall any prior version before you install a new version.

To install the program, double-click the icon for the install program. There are about a half-dozen steps in the install process, but you can accept the default values by clicking the [Next] button.

Make sure you read the License Agreement and understand the ramifications before you click [I Agree].

In most cases, you do not have to uninstall any prior version before you install a new version. For some upgrades, the GedSite News article announcing the new version will include a recommendation to uninstall the old version before installing the new. For the cleanest install, uninstall any existing version first.

You can install multiple versions on your PC if you install them into different folders, but all versions will share the most recent versions of some of the shared components that are stored in the Windows system folder.

Unlock GedSite

After you purchase GedSite, you will receive an e-mail message that confirms the registration information you provided during the purchase process. The e-mail message will include a serial number.

Note Save the e-mail that contains your serial number and the rest of the registration information. If you lose the information, and you need to reinstall GedSite, contact me and I will send you the information again.

When you start GedSite it will open a dialog window where you must enter the registration information in order to unlock the program. The best way to do this is to copy and paste the information from the e-mail message into the data entry fields. Use Control-C to copy and Control-V to paste.

If you do not enter the registration information, GedSite will be limited to producing a web site for only a very small subset of the people in your dataset.

The easiest way to enter the registration information is to copy all four registration information lines from the message, including the field names, with one copy operation, and then use the [Paste All] button in the registration window.

If your name or e-mail address change in the future, and for some reason you have to unlock GedSite again, you must provide the information as it was when you purchased the program.

Notes

  1. The GedSite installer will not prevent you from attempting to install under Windows 7 or previous, however, the program depends on components that are only present in Windows 10 and Windows 11.
